Lifeguarding
Lifeguarding --------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you are interested in working in a fun environment and want to help keep your community safe, lifeguarding may be the career for you. American Red Cross Lifeguarding is ideal for those wishing to work at traditional pools. Prerequisites You must be 15 years of age on or before the last day of class All students are required to swim 300 yards continuously 100 yards of front crawl 100 yards of breaststroke 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke Swim 20 yards continuously using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim back to the starting point holding the object with two hands, and exit the pool from the side. This skill must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Course Requirements In order to pass the course, all students must complete the pre-course skills, the lifeguarding skills, attend all classes and score at least an 80% on all written exams. Completed Certifications Upon completion of the course, all participants will hold certifications in: Lifeguarding First Aid CPR/AED for the professional Rescue The Lifeguarding/First Aid certification is valid for 3 yearsThe CPR/AED for the professional Rescue certification is valid for 1 year Course hours: 32 hours based on a 10 person class Please visit the class schedule page to register.

Waterfront Lifeguarding

Waterfront Lifeguarding -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in working in a fun environment and want to help keep your community safe, lifeguarding may be the career for you. This class teaches the skills to prevent, recognize and effectively respond to aquatic emergencies at a pool or a non-surf waterfront facility like a lake or a beach Prerequisites You must be 15 years of age on or before the last day of class All students are required to swim 550 yards continuously 200 yards of front crawl 200 yards of breaststroke 150 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke Swim 20 yards continuously using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim back to the starting point holding the object with two hands, and exit the pool from the side. This skill must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water, resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool. Course Requirements In order to pass the course, all students must complete the pre-course skills, the lifeguarding skills, attend all classes and score at least an 80% on all written exams. Completed Certifications Upon completion of the course, all participants will hold certifications in: Lifeguarding / Waterfront First Aid CPR/AED for the professional Rescue The Lifeguarding / Waterfront / First Aid certification is valid for 3 yearsThe CPR/AED for the professional Rescue certification is valid for 1 year Course hours: 37 hours based on a 10-person class Please visit the class schedule page to register.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CPR or Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency medical procedure for a victim of cardiac arrest or, respiratory arrest. CPR is an essential skill for anyone to have regardless of their professional background. Course hours: 5 hours based on 10-person class CPRpro is designed for lifeguards and medical professionals. This certification includes Adult, Child, Infant CPR, as well as (AED) automated external defibrillator training. AED Training

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Early CPR can help a cardiac arrest victim, but an electrical shock (defibrillation) is required to correct the problem. The sooner an AED is used, the greater the victim's chance of survival. Each minute defibrillation is delayed; the victim's chance of survival is reduced by about 10%. First Aid --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Keeping your child or loved one safe is your top priority. First Aid teaches you the various steps required to help you be prepared in case of an emergency. This course is recommended for homes and businesses alike. Course Includes: Sudden Illness Wounds Controlling external bleeding Caring for shock Heat and cold related emergencies The first aid certification is included in the lifeguard training. Water Safety Instructor
Water Safety Instructor --------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you are interested in working in a fun environment and want to help teach your community, water safety instructor may be the career for you. This class provides participants with the skills needed to help children and adults refine their strokes and diving techniques. Prerequisites 16 years of age on or before the last date of the course Complete Fundamentals of Instructor Training Swim the following skills at a learn-to-swim Level 4 Front Crawl-25 yards. Back Crawl-25 yards. Breaststroke-25 yards. Elementary Backstroke-25 yards. Sidestroke-25 yards. Butterfly-15 yards. Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling) Tread water for 1 minute Course Requirements In order to pass the course, all students must complete the pre-course skills, the water safety instructor skills/mock lessons, attend all classes and score at least an 80% on all written exams. Completed Certifications Upon completion of the course, all participants will hold certifications in: Learn-To-Swim Levels 1-6 Parent and Child Aquatics Water Safety Outreach Basic Water Rescue Water Safety Presentations Longfellow's W.H.A.L.E.
